SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY - IES SARRIGUREN BHI

CLIMATE DEFENDERS IN ACTION!

Social Responsibility - IES SARRIGUREN BHI, SPAIN

Inspired by what we learnt from Turmepa.org, the 25th of April students from IES Sarriguren BHI took an excursion to the stream nearby the high school.

There, wearing a pair of gloves and a big organic bag, pupils collected trash and took some pictures as one of the last activities of the Climate Defender's project. Apart form that, students also took a water sample from the river in order to analyse it in Biology class afterwards and find out if our surroundings are clean.

This is what they reported back:

DESCRIBE THE PLACE:

Type of water source (river, sea...)?
Stream.

Where is it located?
Nearby the High School, in Sarriguren, Navarre.

How far from your school?
300m away

Was it clean/dirty...?
At first sight, the water was quite clean and the surroundings are very beautiful: there are some flower fields ans trees and you feel as if you were far away from cities and pollution. But as we walked by we found quite a lot of hidden trash.

WHAT DID YOU COLLECT?

What type of waste?
Mainly plastic:
-Bags
-Cans
-Bottles
-Food wrappers
-Plastic beverage
But also other kind of trash, such as pieces of fabric, cardboard and cigarettes, among others.

How much?
We filled 5 big bags altogether

Do you think these kind of little actions are worth the effort?
Yes.
Why?
Because little actions make a difference.

DID YOU TAKE A WATER SAMPLE?
Yes.
If so, what did you find out?
We found out that the PH is a little acid probably because of fertilisers and, as a result, snails and other molluscs can't live there.

"the little things we do as individuals can make a big difference collectively"
